All of a sudden one day the car would not crank at all but would bump start fine. No voltage to the neutral safety switch or starter. Ended up being fuse number 14 which is not listed as anything to do with ignition but is listed as for the dome lights and locking alarm system. Fuse was blown, replaced it.... Instantly back to normal started just fine.
Side note: if the alarm goes off because of low battery or disconnecting the battery you can disconnect the battery, turn the ignition switch to on and reconnect the battery and then crank and start the engine and alarm will be reprogrammed to the key. Otherwise you have to go through the system of working the door windows trunk lock and whatever else. Hope this helps someone else. We racked our brains trying to figure this out and found one thread on the web right before we tore into the starter and wiring harness. Fuse number 14 is the culprit in this case........even though nothing lists fuse 14 as having anything to do with the starting system.
Good catch.....we have seen VW & Audi both have several circuits effected by fuses not listed, even Mercedes too....so you can't always just go by the fuse listings.....makes diagnosis all the more fun :/
